Shortlist announced for Organic Semiconductor Industry Awards 2008

Cambridge, UK, 25 September 2008: The judges of the 2008 Organic Semiconductor Industry Awards (OSIA) are pleased to announce the shortlist for this year's awards. The shortlisted companies for each of the four awards are:

Start-up of the Year award
  • Soligie
Delivers printed electronics products through collaboration and innovative approaches to design, development and manufacturing.
  • Unidym
Manufactures and licenses carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and related technology.
Research and Development award
  • Add-Vision Inc.
For developing a low-cost, flexible P-OLED technology which has high functionality, uses print-based toolsets, and offers early commercialisation opportunities
  • PARU Co.
For using an R2R gravure printer, pad printer and inkjet printer to completely print antenna, rectifier and the ring oscillators and then successfully demonstrating a 13.56MHz operated 1-bit RFID tag
  • OLLA project consortium
For developing and promoting OLED technology for lighting applications on a global scale.
Product of the Year award
  • BIOIDENT Technologies Inc.
For PhotonicLab™ Platform, which uses printed sensor technology to eliminate bulky, expensive optical components, enabling a new class of truly mobile solutions for multiparameter point-of-use medical diagnostics and environmental testing with real-time test results.
  • Dupont Teijin Films (UK) Ltd
For a range of PET and PEN flexible substrates, developed over the last seven years, which have been a key enabler in the development and commercialisation of a range of organic electronics applications.
Best Peer-Review Paper award
  • Holst Centre, Philips Research Europe and ASML
For the paper "Advances in lithographic patterning of micron-sized features on flexible substrates"
  • Carben Semicon Ltd
For the paper "Ribtan - a new graphene-based material for electronics"
  • Institute of Physical Chemistry, University of Muenster
For the paper "A Self-writing Smart Label"
The aim of the awards is to bring together the whole of the organic semiconductor and organic electronics industry (including carbon nanotubes and flexible, plastic and printed electronics) in a celebration of the organisations and people that are leading the development of this emerging technology.

The number of nominations for the awards was significantly higher than last year and the OSIA 2008 judging panel commented on how the quality of the nominations overall was also significantly higher. The standard of nominations reflects the development of the industry which is itself maturing and becoming more organised. This year's judges are:
  • Sir Richard Friend, Cavendish Professor of Physics, University of Cambridge
  • Dickon Pinner, McKinsey & Co
  • Chris Smart, Acacia Capital Partners
  • Mark Hartney, FlexTech Alliance / US Display Consortium (USDC)
  • Sir Robin Saxby, Arolla Partners Ltd
  • Craig Cruickshank, cintelliq
The winners of the awards will be announced at the Networking Dinner of the Organic Semiconductor Conference (OSC-08) on the evening on Tuesday 30 September. OSC-08 runs from 29 September-1 October in Frankfurt, Germany, and is the premier international conference on organic electronics and organic semiconductor technologies.

OSIA 2008 is sponsored by cintelliq ltd, providers of information services and technology consulting to the organic semiconductor industry, and is run in association with OSA Direct, the world's leading newsletter on the organic semiconductor industry.

Craig Cruickshank, cintelliq CEO and member of the OSIA 2008 judging panel, said, "The awards are an important way to recognise excellence in the industry. We are very pleased with the continued high standard of entries for the awards and are grateful to the panel of judges for their rigorous evaluation of the nominations. The past 12 months have seen a number of significant technical developments in the industry, and these have been reflected in the award nominations."
