Seminar 1a: Organic and hybrid materials for printed electronics

Seminar leader: Antonio Facchetti, Northwestern University and Polyera Corp
09.00-10:30 Monday 29 September 2008

This preconference seminar explains the basic concepts that participants will need to understand the fundamentals of organic electronic materials. The structure and operation of organic field-effect transistors will be explained as well as the state-of-the art performance achieved so far for solution-processed devices. Furthermore, the principal printing methodologies and recent developments in low-temperature inorganic/transparent semiconductor deposition will be presented. Specifically:
  • Basics of organic electronic materials
  • Basics of transistor structure and operation
  • State-of-the art solution-processable organic and inorganic semiconductors
  • Device fabrication by printing methodologies
The workshop will cover the following topics:
  1. Organic Electronic Materials. Introduction
    • Semiconductors
      - Structure and basic principles
      - Charge transport and optical properties
      - Small molecules, polymers, and hybrid semiconductors
    • Dielectrics
      - Inorganic, polymers, and self-assembled mono/multilayers
      - Critical parameters affecting OFET performance
      - Surface treatments, interfacial effects
    • Conductors
      - Metals and conducting polymers, contacts and charge injection issues
  2. Organic Field-Effect Transistors
    - Device structure and operation principles; comparison to Si technologies
    - Film microstructure and morphology versus device performance
    - Device characterization and parameter extraction
  3. Low-Temperature Deposition/ Transparent Inorganics
